More importantly, just like all Canon products, quality of printing is never sacrificed. Its 5 color ink tank system uses pigmented black ink for text printing that gives vivid and clear results with hardly any bleeding. To top it off, it is waterproof making it perfect for printing on envelopes and flyers. The paper tray has two paper sources: the rear tray has a pull-up paper support as well as a cartridge that you place from the front. This is the recommended tray for photo paper. The front and rear trays are both capable of handling 150 sheets at a time and can both accept plain paper. I also find its affordable ink prices as an added bonus.

I did a little test to check out its capabilities. In terms of speed, it was able to print 20 pages in just under 5 minutes. This is comparatively slow but not bad at all for home office use. I also tested the image printing quality of Canon PIXMA MX870 on plain paper. It gave out surprisingly good results with minimal banding. The colors turned out to be a little dull but as a whole it met my expectations considering the print speed and paper quality. I then tried out actual photo paper and increased the option to high quality. This is when the printer really shone. It displayed vivid colors with very fine gradients and the image detail was so clear and sharp that I was truly impressed. So at the end of my test, my conclusion is that if you want high quality results and do not mind its speed being rather average, this is the printer for you.

To cap it off, the Canon PIXMA MX870 can be considered as a personal printer but it is also ideal for small scale office use because it includes fax capability and a 35-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF). Compared to the previous model, the Canon PIXMA MP640, its print quality is just as great and the deciding factor would be if you prefer the fax and sheet feeder features of the MX870 or the on-disc printing of the older model which is not included in MX870. Although it is initially suggested for home office use, it would also be great for students and practical for the whole family.
